Birds & wildlife
Look for birds and mammals on the private trails of the Curi-Cancha wildlife refuge, next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
The Lowther family bought the Curi-Cancha property in 1970 and named it after the Incas’ “Golden Enclosure”. It became an official wildlife refuge in 1997 and opened to visitors in its current form in 2011.
Curi-Cancha is a paradise for birdwatching: more than 200 bird species live here. Mammals found on the property include armadillos, coatis, agoutis, kinkajous, ocelots, two-toed sloths and three monkey species — mantled howler, white-faced capuchin and spider monkeys.
The tour starts on the lower part of the private estate and follows natural trails through secondary and primary forest beside the Monteverde Cloud Forest, passing from pre-montane to montane humid forest — habitats that many birds and mammals favour.
